Recent developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, ranging from the drilling disputes to the implications of the Arab Spring for regional countries, risk turning the Eastern Mediterranean region into an area dominated by power politics. At the heart of this region, Turkey faces a number of external challenges that directly influence developments in the Eastern Mediterranean. These challenges revolve around a number of issues including energy and the wider Cyprus problem with its impacts on both the sovereign rights over the island’s resources and Turkey’s EU accession process.
